What is a Trainee?
In California, a Therapist Trainee (sometimes called an Intern) is an aspiring Therapist or Social Worker who is currently working on their master’s degree. They need a Practicum experience working with clients before they can graduate. This individual has achieved a level of education and is ready for actual therapeutic work with clients.
One of the benefits of working with a Trainee is that they typically embody great passion and enthusiasm of someone who is in the early months or years of their career.
Working with a Trainee does not mean you miss out on experience. Many Trainees enter their graduate program with life experience that is equivalent to many years of clinical work.
In addition to this, you also get the benefit of a seasoned provider, as Trainees need to attend at least two, and usually more, hours of case review and skill assessment per week with their Clinical Supervisor.

In some states, an Intern is what California calls an Associate (see below). Associates in California used to be called Interns.
