When the NEW therapist gets a "cutter," a client who engages in self-harm. My first experience - and from what I've witnessed, every therapist's first experience-with a cutter is some version of OH MY GOD!! HOW CAN I MAKE HIM/HER STOP?

Sooooo, relax. Take a deep breath. Believe it or not, stopping doesn't have to be the first goal. If the cutting is deep /suicidal, of course follow the appropriate laws and get a higher level of treatment established.
