Heal Play Love University- Black and White / All or Nothing Thinking of the Narcissist #therapistreacts
Black and White Thinking of the Narcissist / All or Nothing Thinking of the Narcissist.
While it appears as if the Narcissist is doing this black and white thinking on purpose to drive you crazy, most likely she/he is not. It mostly likely is due to the way the Narcissist has organized life, experiences, people and him- or herself/ 'sense of self.'
Black and white is the way they experience life. Imagine being in a place where you can't comprehend the gray area- the ambiguity. Imagine a place where you must see things through a rigid, all - or nothing viewpoint. It's not something to fight.
We can't change their viewpoint or organizational structure through logic, reasoning or arguing. Instead, we must step back emotionally, understand that they have developed this framework for a reason (it keeps them safe, gives them a false sense of security or helps them maintain control- real or imagined- over their anxiety).
But, we can learn how to speak to the narcissist so that we don't trigger them into a narcissistic rage, going Jekyll and Hyde, lecturing, etc.
