If you are a therapist and this is happening to you, relax. It's not about you. That little kiddo may be testing the waters to see if you are a safe person. They may not have the words to use to describe what they are feeling.

They may have been in trouble before for expressing their feelings. Your goal isn't to get them to talk. Your goal is to help them internalize a sense of safety and acceptance.

When you switch the focus, you switch your therapeutic world- and your individual clients' experiences with you. So now you won't have to say "My client won't talk.” You will know that there are no resistant clients, really. Only a therapist who can try a different approach.
