These communication tips were borrowed from the field of treatment for tbi, or traumatic brain injury. This is because I believe there are some (albeit vague) similarities in the perceptions and social style of people who have a brain injury and people who have difficult or confusing patterns of interacting (say, someone with narcissistic traits, for example).
There is research to suggest that the brains of children who experience trauma (especially attachment trauma) develop differently than those who did not. These differences can show up in ways that we call a "personality disorder" or other mental health label.
Communication Techniques to Use with a Difficult Person
