Heal Play Love University- Low Frustration Tolerance and Cognitive Distortions in the Narcissist
Narcissism - Low Frustration Tolerance and Cognitive Distortions in the Narcissist
Low Frustration Tolerance is the inability to handle being even mildly upset. Cognitive Distortions are ideas or thoughts that are faulty- they don't align with reality. The normal ups and downs of daily existence can put a burden on the Narcissist’s emotional regulation skill set.
Frustration tolerance is based in a faulty belief system, such as “I should always be comfortable,” “My life should be easy,” “Other people should meet my needs,” “I shouldn’t have to handle disappointment,” and so forth. (Sound familiar?) If it does, don't argue, name call or yell. Keep your cool and use a good communication technique that validates his or her feelings and puts a rational perspective on the issue.
Narcissistic Abuse- While I advocate for a different look at Narcissism, I do not condone abuse. If you are being abused by a Narcissist - or anyone, for that matter, get out when it is safe and seek the help of a qualified professional! Flashlighting is an attitude and response to gaslighting and other tactics of Narcissism. It's when you step out of the dark and start working toward change!
