Secrets of Therapy: I Want My Clients to Like Me #therapistbootcamp
Secrets of Therapy. Emotional Dangers of Being a Therapist. I Want My Clients to Like Me.
If you are a therapist, people are not always going to like you. They get mad at you. You gotta be comfortable in who you are and what you do. You gotta be that solid rock- you don’t get dysregulated by their emotions.
Address the “I want people to like me” pull. That will keep you off balance. It will allow you to get upset when clients experience 1) transference. 2) File an abuse report 3) Call for suicide or harm to others
Don’t take it personally. Like going to the dentist. We don’t like it. It’s painful at first, but healing over the long term.
Or, like you are the good big sibling or good parent, doing what is best even though you know it’s going to upset someone.
Are you willing to speak the truth into your clients’ lives? Say what needs saying. Part of it is legal responsibility part of it is ethical responsibility.
Most of it is being a great therapist.
Remember, It’s not about you.
Shout out to: An amazing Supervisor during my internship. Wonderful clients who taught- and continue to teach me more and more every day.
My goal with the ‘Best Advice’ series is to help new therapists (LMFT, AMFT, Associates, LCSW, ASCW, LPC) with wisdom that was passed along to me and/or with wisdom I learned the good old fashioned hard way. I am still learning every day.
