When your therapist diagnoses you, they are looking for a few a things. First, they want to get a concise picture of what is going on.
Second, your therapist gives a mental health diagnosis because they need a shorthand language to communicate with.
Third, your therapist uses the diagnosis in designing the treatment plan with you.
Fourth, your therapist must use the diagnosis in billing insurance for services rendered.
So, as you will see, therapists don't diagnose their clients for fun or to be mean or because they are on a power trip. There are practical reasons for a diagnosis. Please do not think of your diagnosis as a label. Please don't let your diagnosis define you.
