Dysfunctional opposites always attract! Why do we become codependent? Usually some form of attachment issue, childhood trauma or PTSD - usually the chronic / complex type. Prolonged exposure to walking on eggshells, jumping over land mines and trying to earn a parent's love can create low-self esteem, a disbelief in our own value, and a willingness to put up with unhealthy behaviors in a relationship partner.
When we engage in repeated relationship patterns of being attracted to the wrong people (controlling, narcissistic, abusive, alcoholic, addict) we call that repetition compulsion. Repetition compulsion is the unconscious desire to repeat old, unhealthy relational patterns from the past.
