Foster Care Children come into contact with the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) / Children's Services Division (CSD) / Child Protective Services (CPS) for a variety of reasons. Sometimes parents struggle with alcohol or substance abuse issues, anger management, and/or parenting skills. Some children have been exposed to abuse and/or neglect.
A child who has been removed from his or her home may experience a wide variety of emotions including confusion, fear, abandonment, anger, grief/loss, and longing. Some kids struggle with attachment issues. Many children enter into the foster care system with PTSD.
Reunification is usually recommended by the Court and therapy can assist with this process. It is often helpful for kids and teens to receive individual counseling as well as family counseling with their biological family. Counseling can help address issues related to bonding, attachment, behavior management, separation anxiety and reunification transitions, among other issues.
Foster parents face challenges as they provide a nurturing home for children who "act out" due to emotional stress. Children may demonstrate difficult behaviors such as lying, stealing, hoarding food, nightmares, trouble sleeping, aggression, manipulation, depression, withdrawal and school troubles. Many of these concerns can be addressed in a therapeutic environment.
