Clinical Supervision is a vital part of your early learning and growth as a therapist. Laying a solid foundation is important to your future clients’ – and your career- success.
So many new grads take the stance of "Pick me!" rather than "Whom shall I pick?" Don't settle on the first Supervisor that comes along or grab the most affordable Supervisor in town. Here are some ideas to consider when finding your Supervisor...
- Interview your potential supervisor (does he or she specialize in your desired clinical focus, have an approachable personality, etc.?) - Is he or she a good therapist/ would you go to this person as a client if you weren't choosing him/her as a Supervisor? - Sit in on a real supervision group (a confidentiality agreement will need to be signed) - Ask questions related to the field, his or her background, and the licensing process - Ask colleagues for recommendations - Do research on each potential Supervisor
Please don’t take this aspect of your training lightly. Take the time to find the right fit.
